The Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) is leading the way in patient safety and quality care as two members of its oral health team have earned national Certification in Dental Infection Prevention and Control (CDIPC). This achievement enhances infection prevention standards across the community HDNW serves and within its eight Dental Clinic North locations.

The initiative began with Dawn Marie Strehl, HDNW Regional Oral Health Supervisor, whose goal was to demonstrate her commitment to infection prevention, control, and overall public health. Joining her in this effort, Kara McLellan, Community Oral Health Coordinator II, also earned the CDIPC credential to further strengthen HDNW’s infection control standards.

“Dawn Marie and Kara have shown their dedication to dental excellence by attaining the CDIPC,” says Shannon Klonowski, HDNW Health Officer. “Their achievements align with HDNW’s vision: Healthy People in Healthy Communities. As we continue to prioritize patient safety, HDNW will remain at the forefront of best practices.”

Led by Strehl, HDNW’s oral health team delivers essential services and advances community well-being across Northern Michigan by providing preventive dental services. From conducting oral health screenings for seniors, to promoting healthy smile among kindergarten students and preventing cavities with dental sealants, to collaborating with nurses on fluoride varnish applications through the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. This outreach helps people of all ages access the dental care they need.

The CDIPC certification represents a nationally recognized commitment to excellence, confirming a deep understanding of infection prevention protocols and best practices in the dental field.
