Charlevoix COATS meeting to plan drug-free and alcohol-free activities

(May 12, 2008) Charlevoix COATS, or Community Offering Alternatives to Substance Abuse, is meeting on Monday, May 19 at 6:00 PM at the Charlevoix Public Library Armstrong Conference Room. All are welcome, especially parents of students who live in the Charlevoix Public Schools district.

“In neighboring towns, COATS is a great parent-driven organization,” said Kristen Maufort, substance abuse prevention specialist for the Health Department of Northwest Michigan, assigned to schools in Charlevoix and East Jordan. “The Charlevoix COATS parents will be planning fun drug-free and alcohol-free activities for our students. We’re just getting off the ground so we are open to all ideas.”

Maufort said similar groups in Cheboygan, Harbor Springs, Indian River, Mackinaw City, and Petoskey offer motivational speakers for middle and high school students, driving drunk simulations before the spring party season, and regular fun, substance-free activities like bowling, movies, and dances.

The Health Department of Northwest Michigan is mandated by the Michigan Public Health Code to promote wellness, prevent disease, provide quality healthcare, address health problems of vulnerable populations, and protect the environment for the residents and visitors of Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego counties.
