New Health Center to Provide Healthcare for Those in Need

July 21, 2009-Petoskey, Michigan--Starting on July 27, 2009, uninsured and underserved residents of northern Michigan will have the opportunity to receive healthcare from a new health center located between Petoskey and Harbor Springs. The Community Health Center of Northern Michigan, collaboration between Northern Michigan Regional Hospital, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan, and Northern Health Plan, is located in the Health Department building at 3434 M-119, Suite C, Harbor Springs.

The Alcona Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center with a long history of providing care for underserved populations, operates the new Community Health Center. Services offered include family and general healthcare, health education, counseling, low-cost medications, laboratory procedures, and referrals for dental care. Medicaid is accepted, all services are offered regardless of the ability to pay, and a special discount fee program is available based on income.

Several years ago, representatives from the Health Department of Northwest Michigan, Northern Health Plan, and Northern Michigan Regional Hospital decided to increase access to care for underserved residents of Emmet County by developing a primary care clinic together. They obtained special designation from the state and federal government allowing a Federally Qualified Health Center to expand its services in Northern Michigan.

"After five years in the making, we are very excited to finally be able to open the doors to our new Community Health Center. It is a wonderful service that we will be able to offer residents of northern Michigan, and I am pleased that those in need now have access to healthcare close to home," said Boyd Manges, MD, Medical Director for the Community Health Center.

Residents of northern Michigan are invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house for the Community Health Center of Northern Michigan on Thursday, July 23, from 4-6 p.m.
